Control your home security from your phone

Security is getting smarter. Did you know that our Home Alarm Systems can now be controlled via mobile Apps?

The evolution of technology over the past decade has led to many changes in the way we go about our day-to-day lives. Most of us have had to adapt to the latest household gadgets and means of communication, all of which have been developed for simplicity and convenience.

Who would have thought 10 years ago that you'd be able to pay for something without a card or cash, or control your central heating from your phone?

Well, security technology has embraced to this new trend too. Manufacturers are now developing products that utilise internet connections and mobile Apps to help give you more control over the protection of your home. These are known as 'smart security systems'.

What is a smart security system?

Smart security has become a hot topic within the home security market. A smart security system is a home security system that can be 'controlled' through an internet browser or mobile App.

The alarm system itself works in exactly in the same way as any other standalone system, but if it's compatible, it can provide the additional benefit of being controlled by you, from wherever you are in the world. This is what makes it 'smart'.


What are the benefits?

With an App, you gain the ability of being able to self-manage your alarm on the move. Wherever you are, as long as your device is connected to WiFi or 3G/4G, you can control your alarm via the App.

Using an App on your smartphone or tablet device will allow you to...

• Set and unset your Home Alarm System
• Receive notifications of alarm 'events' determined by you
• View a timeline of past and programmed events in a simple format
• Access a day-by-day calendar of events for the past two weeks by system status

So, whether you are popping into town, at work and want to check all is OK, or thousands of miles away on holiday, you can stay in control of your Home Alarm System.

How does a Smart Home Alarm System work?

In order to work, a WiFi adapter must be fitted to your Alarm System's Control Panel. The adapter connects your system to your home broadband router via a secure wireless connection. This is what provides the link from your system to your App.

Configuring your App

In order to configure your system with the App, an engineer will need to 'map' each device on your system. This is usually done on a room by room basis. For example, the movement sensor in your kitchen can be named 'Kitchen' on your App. You can then check its individual status, and receive notifications specific to that device in the event it is triggered. The engineer will provide a demonstration on how to use the App, so you're comfortable with its operation.

Events & Timeline

Your App can be programmed to send you notifications of alarm 'events' so you can keep track of daily activity and anything unexpected.

These events are viewable on an easy-to-understand timeline, which shows all alarm activity from the past two weeks.


Can I add an App to my existing Alarm System?

Yes, but it does depend on the system you have installed and whether it is compatible. The best way to find out is to give us a call - a member of our team can discuss your requirements and establish whether an App can work with your existing system, or whether an upgrade may be required. This is likely to be the case if your system has seen been installed for a number of years.

What if my system is already monitored?

If your alarm is connected to an external monitoring centre, you are still able to benefit from use of the App. However, currently, the use of Apps does not meet the required standards required for monitored alarm systems with Police Response.

I don't have an Alarm System at the moment - Can I still get an App?

Absolutely. We now offer the App with every new system we install. Once you've got a visit booked with one of our surveyors, they will be able to discuss the App with you at your initial survey appointment.

What's involved?

To enable your existing system* to work via the App, we will need to fit a Wi-Fi adapter. The package includes supply and installation of the adapter, configuration with the App and a demonstration of how to use the App by our engineer.

When we connect your system with the App, we’ll also give you a Smart Plug. This wireless plug adapter sits between a wall socket and the power plug of any mains-powered device, such as a lamp or radio. Using your App, you’ll be able to turn the device on and off from your phone - a great way to help make your home look occupied when you’re away.
