Home Security Advice for New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is famous for its celebrations, when all over the world, families and friends will gather together to watch the clock strike midnight and tick into January 2018.

What date is New Year's Eve?

New Year's Eve takes place on the 31st December, the last day of every calendar year.

This date is traditionally recognised as a time to reflect on the past twelve months and celebrate the start of a new year beginning. Celebrations take place in many different ways but most commonly involve parties, social gatherings and spending time with family. It is also a worldwide tradition to signal the start of a new year by letting off fireworks - at home or at organised events.

In the UK, the most famous organised new year firework display takes place in London.

Celebrating safely at home

Setting off fireworks at home has become very popular, especially as fireworks have become more widely available and affordable. Although it is popular, it can also be a very dangerous way to celebrate the year. Fireworks present a number of different fire safety risks, so it is important to ensure that you know exactly what you are doing and to use them safely with care.

Following the Firework Code is a great way to help you plan a safe fireworks party.

Keeping your home secure on New Year's Eve

When it comes to security, New Year's Eve is also known as a prime time for burglary.

Burglaries increase by up to 24% on New Year's Eve

That's according to research carried out over 10 years by insurance specialists, AVIVA.

There are several reasons why burglars are found to be more active at this time of year. As well as the longer hours of darkness, they are able to take advantage of party goers who leave their homes unoccupied whilst out celebrating until the early hours. Noise from fireworks being let off across neighbourhoods give good noise cover, and there's also the fact that Christmas has just passed, with many homes containing new and expensive gifts.

Make improving your home security a New Year's Resolution

Make it your New Year's resolution to keep your home safe and secure from any possible risks in 2018. It's important to think about your home security as part of your daily routine, as this helps to keep your property safe from burglars. Regardless of the time of year, your home is always vulnerable the moment you leave it unoccupied and unsecured.
