UK Business Safety Week 2017, 11-17 September

UK Business Safety Week takes place this September and aims to remind businesses how they can stay safe from fire.

Running from 11-17 September, the campaign is organised by the National Fire Chiefs Council's (NFCC) and serves to provide businesses and persons responsible for fire safety, with the information they need to prevent and safely manage fire incidents that could occur in the workplace.

Throughout the week, fire services across Great Britain will be sharing information on a variety of important fire safety topics, from the importance of undertaking Fire Risk Assessments, to ensuring staff are appropriately trained to deal with an emergency situation. There is also advice on protection from arson, liaising with the emergency services and ensuring that sufficient fire protection equipment is in place.

The week has been scheduled to run at a time when many businesses will be recruiting additional members of seasonal staff in the run up to the Christmas period. New recruits may not have the same level of fire safety awareness as permanent members of staff, and may not be aware of the steps needed to protect themselves, their customers and colleagues. It’s also a good opportunity to remind employers of the need to make sure existing staff know the importance of fire safety.

NFCC Protection and Enforcement Lead, Mark Hardingham commented: "I’m delighted that the National Fire Chiefs Council is again working with small and medium size businesses to help them ensure that they are able to operate in a way that is safe from the terrible effects of fire. These businesses make a massive contribution to the UK economy and local communities and we want to help them to do this in a sustainable and safe way."

There are plenty of resources available to download from the NFCC's sister website, which is run by the Chief Fire Officers Assocation (CFOA).
