We all deserve a secure home

Running a household is a challenge. There are so many things to think about and look after, from the essential utilities, to keeping up with the decorating and day to day maintenance.

Understandably, home security is not always the top priority. However, taking the time to consider your home protection is a very wise and often justified decision.

The threat of burglary is persistent, with over 59%* of victims having no or less than basic security measures in place during 2015-16.

As new products and smart home technology becomes available, homes without security remain vulnerable.

Home security tips

In addition to typical products such as monitored home security systems and CCTV cameras, there are many simple things you can do to keep burglars at bay.

As well as seasonal tips that are relevant to certain times of year (such as Christmas and the summer holidays), there are many key tasks you can include in your daily routine to enhance your safety.

Here are some of our smart security tips to follow:

  • Always set your alarm - Or consider having one installed for the best method of protection

  • Lock all your windows and doors - It goes without saying, but it’s worth investing in strong locks and routinely checking they are secured when you prepare to leave home

  • Make your home look occupied - Be sure to leave a light or radio on when you’re out of the house to create the illusion someone is present. This is especially important in the winter months when the nights draw in early

  • Out of sight - Don’t leave valuable items in places where they could easily be seen or accessed by people passing by

  • Going away? - Cancel regular deliveries and ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your house security for you. Asking them to simply draw the curtains at night or leave a light on could help fool a thief

  • Keep the garden tidy - Lock away any garden equipment and tools which could be used by a burglar to gain entry to your home. A tidy garden also gives the impression you care and keep the home well-maintained

  • Social media - Avoid sharing when you’re on holiday or advertising your valuables online for the world to see. Check your privacy settings to make sure they are only seen by people that you trust
